Classes...

Wow, where do I start?  So much has happened, and its only been the first week of classes!  I am actually enjoying my classes!  Art and Archeology is very interesting, it is actually allowing me to dig deeper in the ancient Greek culture by exploring the remnants of the past.  And it is allowing me to see some more of the city.  I mean the other day we had class at the ακρόπολη (Acropolis)! It was crazy! I love the fact that I am no longer reading about art history in text books, but I am actually experiencing it! My next class is my Greek keys class, which is also an interesting class. Really all we do is meet once every two weeks and they take us on a "walk" around the city. Along the way they throw little tid bits of information at us, but its more for us to see and experience where we live more than anything. After every walk we have to post a little journal entry about what we thought, so even though its a really easy class it is an excuse to wander and become more comfortable with the city I live in. Another class that I am really enjoying is contemporary Greek society. It forces you to actually go and immerse yourself in the culture in order to complete your field work. This week we looked at the coffee habits that the Greeks have, we had to go to the cafes around Pagrati (the neighborhood I live in) and order coffee. Then we had to compare the connotation of coffee in Greece to those in America. I like the idea that I have to live this culture in order to do well in that class. My fourth class is Ancient Greek Philosophy, which oh my gosh, blows my mind!!!! I am just not a philosopher! Holy cow! Like today we were trying to wrap our minds around "what is?" The answer: "What is is, just because it is. Is is being, and being cannot not be." Really? Its going to be hard, but I think it is going to be a fun challenging class, one that will really stretch me, but in a good way. But I do have to say my favorite class is my Greek Language class. It blows my mind that I have been here for 3 weeks and I can μιλήστε λίγα ελληνικά (speak a little Greek). I love that fact that I what I learn in class can actually be applied right away. Its really exciting to see the learning process happen! So much fun! And its actually exciting to enjoy my homework, or my readings, it turned into something I want to do, not something I have to do!
